We’re now just about five months into our Star Wars withdrawal. The Force Awakens came and went, and Star Wars: Episode 8 is still over a year away. But, there’s a light at the end of the tunnel, albeit a very dim one. Star Wars: Rogue One, the first-ever Star Wars spinoff movie, arrives at the end of 2016 and of course we all can’t wait. That’s why it’s plaguing fans to wait around for new details to emerge, since all we have is a measly teaser trailer to go off of. That might change very soon, however, with the arrival of Star Wars Celebration Europe in July.
According to Cinema Blend, a number of Star Wars affiliates will be rolling into London squad deep on July 15. These folks include Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy, Rogue One director Gareth Edwards and, as Cinema Blend puts it, “a serious [sic] of other surprise guests will take the stage for a panel concerning anything and everything related to what we love about Star Wars.” Oh yeah, Mark Hamill will be there too!
Now we don’t know exactly what the Star Wars gang will discuss during the festivities, but Rogue One will certainly be on the minds of the attendees. If Kennedy and Edwards haven’t already planned on revealing new Rogue One details, someone in the audience will surely ask. Bear in mind that fans were presented with not one, but two Episode VII teaser trailers within eight months of the The Force Awakens’ premiere. We’re now just seven months away from Rogue One, and by July that number will drop to five. If we don’t have a second by then, it’s very possible it could arrive on that glorious July 15.
Though The Force Awakens was arguably a “bigger” project, Disney and Lucasfilm certainly seemed more willing to share details about the new trilogy than they do with Star Wars: Rogue One. Maybe that’s just because it was harder to hide said details and Edwards and the Rogue One cast are content to slip by in the shadows. Or maybe it’s because Rogue One, at least in theory, will change the game for the Star Wars universe by introducing us to a fresh, but also riskier version of the galaxy far, far away. After all, it’s fair to say that first impressions of Rogue One leaned more towards an espionage war film rather than a Jedi adventure.
Whatever the hell Star Wars: Rogue One intends to be, we’re gonna need more info sooner or later. Mark your calendars for July 15, as well as Dec. 16, when Star Wars: Rogue One finally arrives in theaters.
