It certainly seems that EA tries to make every one of their games into live-service models. They normally release tons of DLC and updates for more revenue. However, there have been a couple of outliers as of late. After the major backlash for over-the-top monetization in Star Wars Battlefront 2, EA seems to be taking it easy in some of their new Star Wars games.
Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order was released without any type of microtransactions, not even cosmetics. The game didn’t receive any paid DLCs or so-called Seasons. A free update was released after a few months for everyone, and that’s about it. Now, you can add one more game to the small list. Star Wars Squadrons was released a week ago and has received positive reception from fans. Just like Fallen Order, Squadrons also doesn’t have any type of microtransactions. There are no post-launch DLCs or paid cosmetics.
Ian Frazier, the Creative Director on Star Wars: Squadrons, recently talked to UploadVR. He claimed that Squadrons is full and will not have any new post-launch content. There are no plans for more content. This might not be the best move, though. Squadrons have received some backlash for a lack of content. However, even if there is less content, you can unlock all of it without spending any extra money.
“Never say never, so to speak, but as far as our philosophy goes we’re not trying to treat the game as a live service,” Frazier said to UploadVR. “We don’t want to say, ‘It’s almost done!’ and then dribble out more of it over time, which to be honest is how most games work these days. So we’ve tried to treat it in kind of an old-school approach saying, ‘You’ve paid the $40, this is the game and it’s entirely self-contained. We’re not planning to add more content, this is the game, and we hope you understand the value proposition.'”
