Nintendo’s E3 2015 plan seemed pretty clear. Based on all the rumors we’ve heard, based on what we know is in development, it seemed like a certainty that Nintendo would announce Super Mario Galaxy 3 or some new 3D Mario game for release this year, and reveal Metroid Wii U for release in 2016. Guess that means you shouldn’t listen to rumors. Who knew! Instead, we’re just getting Star Fox Zero—which looks awesome, but doesn’t have the appeal of Mario—and Super Mario Maker, which seems pretty niche. So, uh, what happened?
Whatever Happened To Baby Metroid?
Don’t get me wrong… Nintendo’s E3 2015 livestream wasn’t terrible. It had awesome Star Fox Zero footage. It had cool puppets. It had lots of cool-looking Nintendo 3DS games, plus a few already announced Wii U games like Xenoblade Chronicles X. But there weren’t any big new game announcements for Wii U. And the Internet is not pleased, to the point that Iwata-san has practically apologized.
So, what happened? Where is this stuff? The obvious answer, of course, is that it wasn’t ready. The new 3D Mario game and whatever Retro’s working on have both been in development for about the same amount of time, close to a year and a half. That’s usually enough for a Mario game, at least since the late Wii era. But if Nintendo really thinks that Super Mario Maker could be a big hit, a Nintendo Minecraft if you will, the company may have pushed off other Wii U Mario-centric announcements in favor of that game. Or it’s just not ready. Same deal for Metroid. Even Nintendo can’t think that the Metroid Prime 3DS spinoffs it showed off will satisfy us. It’s just not ready.
Why not show it anyway? Heck, that’s what Microsoft and Sony have been doing all this time. Quantum Break was announced way back in 2013 and still hasn’t been released. Trouble is, Nintendo gets huge backlash whenever they do the same thing. I won’t say it’s a double standard, because each of Nintendo’s games matters more: After all, there are fewer of them. But everybody flipped out at the Zelda Wii U delay. Nintendo got a lot of blowback. The company has been trained to avoid announcing things too early, lest they disappoint later on… especially an issue since Nintendo has a pretty strong tendency to delay games until they’re ready.
Basically, what I’m saying is: It’s your fault the company didn’t announce Metroid Wii U and Super Mario Galaxy 3 at E3 2015. The games will come out just as soon as they were going to come out anyway… Nintendo just won’t show them, because we’re all too fussy about it.
