A new trailer for Super Meat Boy Forever debuted on Wednesday during Nintendo’s latest Nindies Direct live stream. It sounds like the scope of Team Meat’s next project has expanded a fair amount since we last checked in with the game. But we’ll have to wait until the 2018 release to find out what sort of trouble Meat Boy and Bandage Girl get into in Super Meat Boy Forever.
Originally announced as a mobile title, Super Meat Boy Forever makes pretty significant changes to the mechanical underpinnings of its predecessor. Instead of an ultra-precise platformer, SMBF is more of an auto-runner, albeit one that Team Meat says is much more complex than the average game about a character(s) running endlessly. Super Meat Boy Forever also introduces a simplified control scheme that now uses just two buttons. The game still utilizes complex jumping puzzles to ramp up the difficulty; however, Meat Boy will also be capable of other maneuvers (like punching and air dashing) when Super Meat Boy Forever heads to PC, consoles and smart devices next year. And Team Meat says everything has been designed specifically to complement the two-button layout.
The next adventure for Meat Boy and Bandage Girl sees the duo in hot pursuit of their first child, Nugget, who’s been kidnapped by Dr. Fetus. We don’t expect storytelling to have much more of a presence in the SMBF than we saw in the previous game. But confirmation that we’ll be trying to retrieve something (or, in this case, someone) specific from Dr. Fetus suggests Super Meat Boy Forever may still have something resembling a traditional platformer campaign, even if the levels don’t follow the same structure as the first game.
For an early look at Super Meat Boy Forever, take a few minutes to watch the new gameplay trailer embedded at the top of the page. Then head down to the comments and let us know whether or not the transition from platformer to auto-runner will have any impact on your interest in SMBF.
Super Meat Boy Forever is in development PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, PC, iOS and Android. The game is currently expected to release in 2018.
