Surfing is a sport that has yet to claim any major standing in the U.S. sports landscape, but there has been growth in the sport. After being included in the X Games, surfing competitions has appeared on CBS Sports Network. Now surfing is headed into the virtual world as Vision Games announced Surf World Series.
Surf World Series, which will be released for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Steam, will be the first competitive surfing console game since 2002’s Kelly Slater’s Pro Surfer from Activision. The focus of this game will be the realistic waves in game that will make surfing them challenging for players.
“The wave system in Surf World Series was custom built to not only create a wave that looks and feels stellar, but also to have the swell behave as naturally as possible,” said Climax Studios producer Jamie Fisher. “You’ll feel the current pull against your board as you battle to stay balanced, stick the landing on massive aerials and ride out the heaviest waves.”
According to the developers, the gameplay will be arcade-style which has some surfing fans upset. The action will take place at five of the most recognizable beaches in the world including Bells Beach, Australia, and Waimea Bay, Hawaii. There will 45 single player challenges and an online component that could include up to 15 players facing off in various challenges and competitions. The best tricks win real-life surfing competitions and this game is no exception as the best tricks in surfing such as the Superman and Sushi Roll will be featured at your disposal to defeat the competition.
“As developers, our goal was to capture the vibes that make surfing culture what it is – we amped up the intensity with powerful oceans, stunning backdrops and simple arcade gameplay,” said Fisher. “Surf World Series is easy to get into, but pulling off epic stunts and new school tricks makes it deceptively difficult to master. It takes timing, precision, and most of all, the drive to take on treacherous tubes and monster waves, or dominate the competition online.”
Surf World Series is set to be released sometime in 2017.
