Surface Pro 5 speculation has been almost entirely silent over the past few months, but recent promotions from Microsoft may be enough to rejuvenate discussion. With global Surface Pro 4 price drops over the past few weeks, are we starting to see the first signs of stock liquidation? Let’s unpack the evidence.
First in the timeline of events was a promotion that began about a week ago on the U.K. Microsoft Store. By entering a special coupon code, users could save up to 15 percent on the tablet’s low and mid-tier configurations. Over the past 24 hours, price cut fever has also spread to the United States. A new sku of the low-tier m3 model can be bought for $100 less without the Surface Pen stylus. To make matters more interesting, the no-pen configuration is an astounding AU$450 cheaper in Australia.
Obviously not every sale is indicative of a new product launch, but it’s important to note the concurrent timing and global nature of these price drop efforts. While the rationale remains technically unknown, what we’re seeing here is a sustained campaign by Microsoft to make its flagship tablet a lot cheaper. Cheaper SKUs of existing gadgets often come at pivotal moments in a product’s lifecycle.
It’s also hard to ignore that Microsoft intends to launch its Windows 10 Creators Update early this year. This is a patch that was previously delayed to release alongside “new Surface devices.” Just like what happened to the Surface Pro 3 before it, we think there’s reason to sell through Surface Pro 4 stock before making room for a Surface Pro 5.
If you want a Surface Pro 4 at rock-bottom prices, now may be the time to bite. Those waiting for its successor might want to start saving up too. To get hyped for Microsoft’s next tablet, be sure to check out our wishlist of expected features.
