The Sims franchise has reached a new milestone as it is now 20 years old. To celebrate this occassion, The Sims 4 has released an update that adds the Birthday Hot Tub, which is available at Build Buy. There's also going to be new music and even a limited-edition birthday collection.
For those too young to remember, The Sims was released back on February 4, 2000. When it came out, this simulation game made a lot of the usual gamers scratch their heads in wonder. After all, it was a game that didn't have any defined goals. This meant there was technically no way to win the game. There were even those who went so far as saying that it appeared to be a game for people who didn't have a "real" life. Be that as it may, it turns out that The Sims has its own appeal, and for players and fans, it's more than simply playing house.
In a statement released on its website, The Sims 4 said that the passion the players have for the game is what drives the development team at Maxis to keep creating, and they are "grateful for everything you do, from helping us create a new Stuff Pack to repping your love for The Sims with merch." That said, let's look at some of the numbers of the past 20 years:
- Over 1.6 Billion Sims Created which includes:
- 6.9 million Vampires
- 1 million Mermaids
- 217,000 Aliens
- 1.3 billion WooHoos
- 575 million Sim Households
- 37 Million Sim Weddings
- 173,000 Sim Toddlers
- 65 million hours spent in the Gallery
- 41 million Uploads
- 825 million Downloads
Did we mention that The Sims franchise has been awarded a number of different Guiness World Records? In 2017, for example, The Sims was named the "Best Selling PC Game Series" and was also awarded with the "Most Expansion Packs for a Videogame Series." Not too shabby for a game that others say is simply playing house.
As mentioned, this year's birthday celebration is going to have the Birthday Hot Tub. Sims can use this to chat away in, take a skinny dip, or you know, do some WooHoo. Speaking of the Birthday Collection, you can view the offers here.
