Tomb of the Mask by HappyMagenta hit the app store Feb. 9 and went straight to the top of the Best New Games section -- and for good reason. The addictive arcade maze game challenges players to gather coins and dots as they travel upward through a maze with obstacles to overcome like spiked walls, nasty little monkeys and slithering snakes, all the while trying not to get zapped by an upward-moving wall of color. If the wall manages to reach your character it’s game over. Though the maze goes on endlessly until you crash into an adversary, or the colored wall catches up to you, you do reach new levels by accumulating dots along your runs. With each new level you reach, your score is multiplied by the level number, allowing you to earn an increasingly higher score.
The game sports a retro pixel art design totally fitting to the gameplay and rewards the player with new masks to unlock every time he or she completes a level. But anyone who’s played Tomb of the Mask a little while knows, the game ramps up pretty quick and that can make progressing tricky. In the few hours we’ve spent playing the game, we picked up on a few things that do help with moving your way through the maze and getting higher and higher scores. Check them out.
Tomb of the Mask Tips And Tricks For Longer Runs, Higher Scores, More Coins And Powerups
Tomb of the Mask Tip #1: Move Quickly, But Stay Alert
There are a ton of adversaries that can end your run in this game and one of them is that colored wall that keeps moving upward behind you. As a result, you need to swipe your way through the maze as quick as you can, but when you get to a place where spiked walls start showing up, you may need to pause momentarily to reflect on your movement. Of all of the obstacles out there, those blue spiked walls are probably the ones that render the most casualties. I’ve found I tend to run into them when there’s a coin in front of it. Just make sure to keep your eye on where those spiked walls are and which walls will cause you to bounce into one.
Tomb of the Mask Tip #2: You Can’t Catch All The Dots, So Stop Trying.
Progressing through levels in Tomb of the Mask is dependent on gathering enough dots to fill your level meter up, while coins help you buy useful stuff like shields and other power-ups. As a result, it might be tempting at first to try to capture every single dot and coin in the maze, but this strategy will ultimately fall short. There’s just not enough time to gather them all as that colored wall moves upward. Of course, you want to grab as many dots and coins as you can but don’t go out of your way to grab every single one. You’ll have longer runs this way.
Tomb of the Mask Tip #3: Use Your Coins Wisely
Coins offer you the option to purchase new masks and power-ups or revive your character if it dies during a run. But use them wisely, because earning them takes a long time. Probably one of the worst uses of coins is reviving your character. It cost 500 coins and rarely makes a big difference in your progression. It’s better to spend that money on power-ups like shields or masks with their varying perks. I won’t say never to use the coins to revive your character. Just save the option for when you’ve really made a significant high-score you’d like to extend further.
Tomb of the Mask Tip #4: Watch Some Videos And Earn Coins
Though the game does have a monetization component, which allows users to purchase coins from the store, they’ve actually been pretty generous about offering coins to players for watching videos. Watch one video and you get 500 coins. Meanwhile, purchasing coins in the store starts at $0.99 for 3,000. 500 coins is a pretty significant amount and will buy you a shield, freeze or coin addict power-up as well as new mask if you level up. You can only see a few videos each day, so use the money wisely.
Tomb of the Mask Tip #5: Get The Right Power-Ups At The Right Time
There are four different power-ups you can purchase in the game (Coin Addict, Magnet, Freeze and Shield) and each is useful in its own way, but I wouldn’t recommend getting any till you’ve started to progress through at least the first 4-5 levels. Each time you buy one, the price of the next increases. In early gameplay, the magnet or Coin Addict are probably most useful. Later in the game shields almost become essential in getting past enemies and obstacles.
Tomb of the Mask Tip #6: Unlock New Mask As You Level Up
Mask become available as you reach new levels in the game, and though they cost coins to unlock, once purchased you can switch out and use different ones on each run. The masks offer better and better perks the higher up you get in the levels so consider which will serve you best and make sure to unlock and put it on!
