One of the most celebrated Japanese role-playing game of all-time is going to be remade and reimagined for modern platforms. Next year, Trials of Mana will drop for major gaming platforms, bringing the classic RPG to new audiences worldwide.
Nintendo and Square Enix made a joint announcement at the Nintendo Direct stream yesterday where they confirmed its April 2020 launch date and its availability for the PS4, Switch, and PC. The game was also showcased at the Tokyo Game Show 2019, where they revealed several details about the game as shown below:
The new Trials of Mana remake isn’t just an HD reskin of the original game. Trials of Mana (2020) has been built from the ground up in 3D, taking the elements that made the original game great, and re-imagining it for modern platforms and modern audiences. The trailer above shows off the once two-dimensional game world and characters as they have been remade into 3D, as well as some features of the game that we can expect come April of next year. Like the original game, it seems Trials of Mana will have a complex, branching storyline with unique paths determined by which of the available characters you choose to play as. Character classes branch out following the original’s Light/Dark class system.
The original Trials of Mana was released back in 1995, and was originally entitled Seiken Densetsu 3. Trials of Mana was the third installment in the Mana series, which spanned 11 games (including the World of Mana subseries and spinoffs) from 1991 to 2016. On the whole, the Mana series’ reception to global audiences has decreased over each iteration, but the first three games are widely regarded as the best in the series.
Officially scheduled to launch on April 24, 2020, Trials of Mana will be available on PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam.
