The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman has slowly revealed how Negan came to be in his comic series, but don’t expect to see the villain’s past on The Walking Dead Season 7.

[Warning: If you don’t want to know about the All Out War storyline in the comics and whether Rick will win against Negan, stop reading now.]

Like the majority of The Walking Dead fans, we are desperate to see how Negan came to be so rotten on the TV show. The zombie apocalypse has brought out the worst in humanity and Negan is the shining example of how far someone can go when pushed to their limits. We’re pretty sure Shane would’ve turned out like Negan had Rick not killed him.

Unfortunately, it’s too soon for The Walking Dead to have a Negan-centric episode. Right now, the show wants you to hate Negan, which is why they killed Glenn and Abraham in the first episode. This served to make the audience want to root for Rick to destroy Negan, and leads into the all out war storyline where Rick and Maggie successfully bring the communities together to rise up against Negan.

However, they cannot afford to keep Negan in as a one-dimensional, mustache-twirling bad guy. Negan had a life before the zombie apocalypse, and it was actually a pretty sad one. Here are some details about Negan you might not know, according to the backstory Kirkman created for the character:

  • Negan was married to a woman named Lucille. He loved her deeply.

  • Lucille was diagnosed with a terminal illness and died in the hospital while the world was coming to an end. Lucille was the first walker Negan ever saw.

  • Negan was having an affair before he learned of Lucille’s illness. He felt incredibly guilty for betraying his wife and immediately ended the affair to do right by Lucille.

  • Negan was always a hard-ass, especially to the kids he used to coach.

  • Negan never had kids of his own, but from the show it appears it’s something he really wants, hence the multiple wives.

  • At first, Negan tried to help people post-zombie apocalypse, but he saw many of the people he tried to help die. It lead him to be less willing to work with others and created a “it’s my way or the highway” persona.

This only scratches the surface. Negan wants to be a good guy, but knows it’s not realistic in the world they live in. Just like Rick, he’s seen some people do horrible things to each other in order to survive. Hopefully we’ll see a Negan-centric episode in The Walking Dead Season 8, but don’t expect to see anything just yet.
