Rick Grimes doesn’t have everything under control. He’s no Negan, and he learned that the hard way in The Walking Dead Season 8 episode 7.
Rick successfully got Jadis and her garbagemen to switch over to their side. They could’ve easily killed him, but Jadis decided she wanted to play with him instead. She brought out some walkers and forced Rick to fight them. Rick Grimes won and Jadis agreed to take her men to The Sanctuary to finish the job.
He didn’t account for Daryl the Rebel openly disobeying him. Daryl, Morgan, Tara and Michonne plotted against Rick to finish the job themselves. Daryl drove a truck into the other side of the building, which was the biggest mistake ever. The point of keeping Negan’s people inside the walls was so they would turn against him and work with Rick. By bringing the walkers into the Sanctuary, Daryl has now caused the death of many innocent people. Rick didn’t want to kill the workers or Negan’s soldiers. He just wanted to overthrow Negan.
When Rick rolled up to the Sanctuary with Jadis, he felt relieved. Everything was coming together, and it would finally be over. But unlike Negan, people aren’t blindly loyal to Rick. They question Rick, which he allows because it keeps him from losing himself. The downside is people aren’t afraid of the consequences of disobeying Rick. They don’t fear him like they do Negan. So Rick’s rebels just added to the chaos instead of ending it.
So what happens next? You've probably already guessed it. Negan will escape and bring hell to the communities who worked against him. Eugene has crafted a counterattack plan, which we will probably see in the midseason finale next week. The Kingdom has lost all of its soldiers and it’s time we lose some of Rick’s people. The announcement of Morgan’s character crossing over to Fear The Walking Dead leads me to believe the next episode may be his final one.
If you thought Rick would take down Negan in the first attempt, I’m sorry. Negan is the smartest villain we’ve seen on the show. He saw the value of having someone like Eugene in his camp. Eugene has slowly become Negan’s right-hand man, which is dangerous for Rick. Eugene knows everything about Alexandria and how Rick operates. Once Negan is out of the Sanctuary, and he will get out, the next part of the All Out War storyline will happen: Chemical Warfare.
But there’s still hope for Eugene. He didn’t tell Negan about Dwight being the double agent, even after Dwight shot down his walker-repelling drone. Maybe he wants Rick to win after all.
