In Grey’s Anatomy Season 12 episode 21, Arizona and Callie begin their fight over who will have legal custody of their daughter Sophia. Callie has plans to move to New York with her girlfriend, who is pursuing a medical grant and assumed that she would be able to take Sophia (her biological daughter) with her. However, at the end of episode 20 , Arizona, who legally adopted Sophia when the two were married, told Callie that she should refer all discussions about their child to her lawyer.
An episode 21 promo shows Callie and Arizona enlisting the help of their friends at the hospital to be on their side amid the custody battle. Callie has asked Meredith and Alex for support, while Arizona has been getting advice from Richard.
It appears there is an official shadowing Callie and Arizona to observe her ability to work and raise a child. Arizona is concerned that she is not making a good impression on the official, and may be denied full custody of Sophia.
Will Arizona lose the custody battle she started? We will learn more in the upcoming episode “You're Gonna Need Someone on Your Side,” which is best viewed on television or live online through ABC Live .
Meanwhile, Stephanie has been dating a former patient, Kyle Diaz, and is having trouble with boundaries within the budding relationship.
The rest of the story unfolds Thursday, when Grey’s Anatomy airs at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
