With the launch date of the PlayStation 5 inching closer by the day, a big question on everyone’s minds is whether the accessories that they splurged on for the PlayStation 4 will still be usable once they’re on the PlayStation 5. In a blog post, Sony Interactive Entertainment answered these concerns and provided details as to what accessories will and will not be supported with the upcoming PlayStation 5.
In the post, a list has been included which details the peripherals and accessories from the PlayStation 4 that will work on the PlayStation 5. First off, specialty peripherals such as officially licensed racing wheels, arcade sticks, and flight sticks will work with PlayStation 5 and supported PlayStation 4 games. The Platinum and Gold Wireless Headsets, as well as any third-party headsets that connect via USB port or audio jack will also work on the PlayStation 5, although it is important to note that the companion apps will not be compatible with the PlayStation 5.
As for controllers, the DualShock 4 wireless controller and PlayStation officially licensed third-party gamepad controllers will work with supported PlayStation 5 games. The VR controllers (PlayStation Move motion controllers and the PlayStation VR aim controller) will also work with VR games for the PlayStation 5. There is still a reminder that not all third-party peripherals or controllers are guaranteed to work on the PlayStation 5 and owners may need to check with their respective manufacturers for compatibility issues for the console and specific titles.
Later in the post, Sony answered a common question: Will DualShock 4 controllers work with PlayStation 5 games? The post quickly answers by saying, “No, we believe that PlayStation 5 games should take advantage of the new capabilities and features we’re bringing to the platform, including the features of DualSense wireless controller." To clarify, this just means that the DualShock 4 will work with any and all backwards compatible titles for the PlayStation 5. For all other games, it will not work and players will be required to use the new DualSense or a compatible third-party alternative. Finally, the PlayStation Camera will also work for the PlayStation 5 for all supported PlayStation VR games. A camera adapter will also be provided at no additional cost.
