Gamers have never been more excited about Monster Hunter, based on the record-setting sales reported for Monster Hunter: World , but even the most accessible game in the franchise’s history is still proving difficult for some hunters. Thankfully, the Monster Hunter community has already started to uncover many of the game’s secrets, making it easier for less experienced players to progress through the Monster Hunter: World campaign.

There seems to be a lot of uncertainty within the community about how to acquire Wyvern Gems, an ingredient in several High Rank equipment recipes, so we put together a quick explanation of where and how you can obtain the rare crafting material. It’s certainly not the easiest get in Monster Hunter: World. But if you can find a populated Online Session, particularly one focused on High Rank investigations and/or expeditions, you should have a healthy supply of Wyvern Gems in no time.

So where do I find Wyvern Gems?

Wyvern Gems have been found on five creatures: Barroth, Diablos, Jyuratodus, Radobaan and Tobi-Kadachi. The drop rates seem to be better on High Rank creatures; however, that could also be influenced by the point at which players start hunting the item. Some believe the drop rates for Wyvern Gems are slightly better when capturing wyverns instead of killing. Several players have also reported receiving Wyvern Gems as rewards for finishing Optional Quests and Investigations that targeted large wyverns like Rathalos and Rathian. Investigations with gold reward will be your best bet, since they increase the likelihood you'll pull down one of the incredibly rare gems. It's also worth noting that the Pukei-Pukei drops a similar item, the Bird Wyvern Gem; however, that stone is used in different recipes. So try not to get them mixed up in your head.

And how do I get the Wyvern Gem?

Recovering the gems is a bit tougher. Wyvern Gems aren’t tied to a specific body part for either creature, so you can’t just break something(s) to ensure it’s part of your post-kill/capture loot. All you can do is kill/capture gem-carrying creatures and hope for the best. That means spending a lot of time in Wildspire Waste and the Rotten Vale. Theoretically, you could also find Wyvern Gems in Tailraider Safari loot and Argosy bundles; however, neither should be treated as a consistent source of gems. Anything obtained by your Palico teams or from the Captain should just be thought of as a bonus.
