Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney Denies 'Fortnite' Movie Rumors With a One-Word Response

Video games getting a screen adaptation is becoming common.

In an age where video game translations to the big screen are increasingly the norm, "Fortnite" appears to be behind other big titles like "Resident Evil," "Minecraft," and the latest "Super Mario Bros."

There are recent rumors that a "Fortnite" movie will be released soon.
However, Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney has closed the rumored book for good, leaving fans ponder if the battle royale game will ever find its way into cinemas.

The False 'Fortnite Movie' Rumor

The rumors of a "Fortnite" movie started with a tweet by film industry insider Daniel "DanielRPK" Richtman, Eurogamer reports.

In the since-deleted tweet, Richtman proposed that although certain studios had earlier rejected plans for a "Fortnite" movie, the current success of other video games adapted to the big screen would force "Fortnite" to be the next big game to make it to the silver screen.

"You just know Fortnite is next. There was already talk of a Fortnite movie, but some studios passed on it. That's obviously gonna change now," Richtman posted in a now-deleted tweet.

Why A 'Fortnite' Movie May Not Happen—At Least Not Yet

Although other video game film adaptations, like "The Super Mario Bros." Movie and the recently released "Minecraft Movie," have been successful, Sweeney announced that "Fortnite" will not be going on the big screen anytime soon.

Although the gaming community witnessed a wave of game-to-film adaptations, Sweeney's denial implies that Epic Games isn't looking to take this path with "Fortnite"—at least, not for the time being.

This choice may be a result of Epic's plan to maintain "Fortnite" largely as a live online experience and not expand into a static film medium. Epic Games has had a history of prioritizing that the game stays current with new seasons, crossovers, and live events, something that might get lost in a film version.

The Success of Video Game Movies Doesn't Guarantee a 'Fortnite' Film

While video game movies are becoming increasingly popular, the success of "Minecraft" and "Super Mario Bros." might not be sufficient to persuade Epic Games to greenlight a Fortnite film.

The "Minecraft Movie" alone raked in $301 million worldwide on its opening weekend, creating a new record for video game films. "Super Mario Bros." Movie also did exceptionally well. Still, each game's story and world are extremely unique from Fortnite, and this could be why Epic Games has been hesitant.

Even though the movie rumors were debunked, "Fortnite" remains a bustling center of energy for its gamers. One of the most recent leaks was the "Fortnite" x "One Piece" crossover, which will send anime fans into a frenzy if that happens.
