The prospect of Neil Patrick Harris reprising his role as Music Meister from Batman: The Brave and the Bold for The Flash-Supergirl musical crossover has been at the forefront of DC TV rumors for months. Finally, writer Greg Berlanti has confirmed Music Meister is indeed the villain, but whether NPH will bless us with his performance is still unclear.
“We’re certainly huge fans of [Harris],” showrunner Andrew Kreisberg said at the Television Critics Association Winter Press tour, according to TV Line, “And as the casting process proceeds, we’ll see what happens.”
There are multiple reasons NPH really needs to be a part of this. First off, the crossovers could really use some humor. Neil Patrick pulls off corny in a fresh way, which is exactly what The Flash needs. The “Invasion!” crossover lacked the lightness Legends of Tomorrow pulls off on a weekly basis , and NPH could provide some much needed comic relief. Not to mention that a live-action take on “Mayhem of the Music Meister,” released almost a decade ago, would just be awesome.
Harris finally spoke on the rumors during an interview with IGN about his upcoming role in A Series of Unfortunate Event s on Netflix.
“I’ve heard about it, but that’s as much as it has been,” Harris said. “I did the Music Meister in a recording booth in L.A. 15 years ago or something?” Harris vaguely recalls (the series ran from 2008-2011). “It was a fun episode; it was a good thing to do… He wears a bigfoot suit, from what I remember [and] the song was fun to sing, so I don’t know, we’ll see.”
Harris said he heard Joss [Whedon] was involved, whom he worked with on the musical web series, Dr. Horrible’s Sing Along Blog . Whedon will likely direct The Flash and Supergirl musical crossover episode.
This is a very unique opportunity for The CW, considering The Flash and Supergirl have musically-inclined cast members, most notably Grant Gustin and Melissa Benoist, who’ve both been a part of Glee . Jeremy Jordan (who plays Winn on Supergirl ), Victor Garber (Firestorm on Legends ) and Jesse L Martin ( Joe West on The Flash ) have performed on Broadway. Australian artist Keiynan Lonsdale (Kid Flash) is best known as a singer and dancer on the series Dance Academy . He also released his first single, ‘Higher,’ this year.
Music Meister is a villain who controls people through song, who can hypnotize his victims to believe everyone’s singing. In the Batman: The Brave and the Bold episode ‘Mayhem of the Music Meister,’ he hypnotizes Black Canary, Green Arrow, Aquaman, Black Manta, Gorilla Grodd and Clock King in an effort to destroy the world. Of course Batman tries to stop him, and when Music Meister orders the group of heroes to attack, they do so singing and dancing in harmony. Take a look:
