WWE 2K18 won’t just be a PlayStation 4 and Xbox One release, 2K Sports, Visual Concepts and Yuke’s confirmed on Monday. We’re still waiting for official word that this year’s WWE 2 K project will head to PC at some point, as it has the last few years. But the companies behind the annualized wrestling series have announced plans to release WWE 2K18 on Nintendo Switch.
2K Sports has only been talking about WWE 2K18 for a few months now, dating back to the game’s May announcement . And the publisher still hasn’t given us many specifics about the project, outside of generalized plans to improve the WWE 2K engine and further expand the series’s constantly growing roster. But a short video, featuring WWE 2K18 cover athlete Seth Rollins, confirms WWE will end its multi-year hiatus from Nintendo platforms. WWE ‘13 was the last major wrestling game to hit a Nintendo platform, back when the Wii still ruled the roost. But one of the longest-running franchises in gaming will be available on the Nintendo Switch.
There’s still plenty we don’t know about the project. The Switch announcement didn’t include a release timeline and major retailers like Amazon and GameStop have yet to list that version of 2K18. We also don’t know how the Switch port will differ from the PS4/One versions, though 2K was quick to dismiss the notion we’ll see a modified version of a PS3/360 WWE 2K18 release. And a new post on the game’s website confirms the first two members of the roster, Seth Rollins and Kurt Angle, will both be availbale on Switch. 2K says many of the improvements teased last week , including an expanded MyCareer mode and eight-man matches. Unfortunately, we don’t have any information on how Visual Concepts and Yuke’s -- or whichever studio is hired to develop the port, should 2K seek outside assistance -- will modify WWE 2K18 to improve performance on the less-powerful Switch. It’s safe to assume visuals will be diminished a bit, when compared to the PS4 or Xbox One versions. But there’s no word on feature parity at this time.
WWE 2K18 is in development for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch. The game debuts Oct. 17.
