X-Men: Apocalypse is set to release in theaters May 27, and there is a post-credits scene in the latest installment of Fox/Marvel’s mutant saga which teases the future of the franchise.
Collider caught up with Apocalypse writer/producer Simon Kinberg and he dished on what moviegoers should expect from the post-credits scene.
“It’s a nod toward potentially a lot of different movies. I mean certainly the Wolverine movie is related to what happens at the end of it, but there’s also another character that’s introduced, at least in name, in the tag and he could show up in any host of different X-Men films. Maybe a Gambit movie, maybe another X-Men movie.”
X-Men: Days of Future Past ’s post-credits scene teased the arrival of Apocalypse, setting up this year’s villain. The upcoming post-credits scene could possibly do something similar. It’s already known that the next X-Men movie is going to take place in the 90’s ; maybe we’ll get the villain of this new film. The one X-Men villain that has been noticeably absent from all of the films is Mr. Sinister, making him the possible nemesis of the next film. Or maybe we’ll get the tease of the upcoming New Mutants movie.
The Wolverine name drop refers to the third Wolverine movie, coming in 2017, which reportedly takes place in the future. So perhaps we’ll get a look at this future in the last moments of X-Men: Apocalypse.
The Channing Tatum Gambit film is also mentioned. Maybe we’ll see Tatum in full Gambit garb to get fans excited for the oft-delayed movie that is now slated for a 2017 release.
There’s a lot of options, as Kinberg said, for what can be shown during X-Men: Apocalypse’ s post-credits scene, but we’ll have to wait till the film’s release later this month.
