Better late than never: Amazon has picked up Studio Ghibli’s children’s TV anime Ronja the Robber’s Daughter for its Prime streaming service.
Ronja the Robber’s Daughter is an adaptation of a Swedish children’s book from author Astrid Lindgren, creator of Pippi Longstocking.
“From the unique style of Little Big Awesome to the adaptation of beloved book series Ronja the Robber’s Daughter, we aim to bring a new level of storytelling to our customers and their families,” said Tara Sorensen, head of kids programming at Amazon Studios.
The official Amazon description states:
“The daughter of a professional robber, Ronja realizes the complicated nature of her father’s profession when she befriends Birk, the child of a rival tribe. Ronja struggles to balance the relationship with her family and the bond with her self-proclaimed brother Birk as she comes to understand the intricate issues of family and friendship and how differences can be overcome with the help of love and understanding.”
Ronja’s adventures include exploring the wild woodland and its strange creatures surrounding the Scandinavian castle that is her home. You can check out the Japanese-language trailer for Ronja the Robber’s Daughter below:
Ronja the Robber’s Daughter is directed by Goro Miyazaki, son of Hayao Miyazaki, the renowned Studio Ghibli co-founder. The show is 26 episodes long and aired in Japan between Oct. 2015 and March 2015.
Ronja the Robber’s Daughter will be narrated by Gillian Anderson of The X-Files, who was also the voice of Moro in Princess Mononoke . The anime won an award in the Animation category at the International Emmy Kids Awards this past April.
