The anticipated return of "The Last of Us" series adaptation on HBO and Max is on its way, but before the premiere of Season 2, the studio has now confirmed that there will be a Season 3.
Since the release of the video game's series adaptation two years ago, it has been one of the most beloved shows, quickly garnering a fanbase among gamers to non-gamers.
However, gamers who have already played "The Last of Us Part II" already know and expect how the series will end, and the real question now is how the sequel game will be split into Seasons 2 and 3 for HBO's series adaptation.
HBO Confirms 'The Last of Us' Season 3
The latest press release from HBO via Warner Bros. Discovery reveals that the studio has renewed "The Last of Us" series for a third season. The company has confirmed this new season ahead of the season premiere of "Season 2" that is coming later this week.
HBO did not reveal further details about what Season 3 will bring, especially what the story will be about as it is known that Season 2 will focus on "The Last of Us Part II." It is important to note that game is currently the last installment of the series from Naughty Dog.
"We approached season two with the goal of creating something we could be proud of. The end results have exceeded even our most ambitious goals, thanks to our continued collaboration with HBO and the impeccable work of our unparalleled cast and crew," said "The Last of Us" showrunner Craig Mazin.
He added, "We look forward to continuing the story of 'THE LAST OF US' with season three!"
Previous reports claimed that Season 2 would run as far as the "Seattle Day 1" events of the source material, and it would end the show at that point of the story. Then, it would return with Season 3 and deliver the remaining story to fans and is believed to be the final season of the series adaption as that is also where the source material ends.
'The Last of Us' Season 2 Premiere Is Coming
When HBO released the official teaser trailer of "The Last of Us" Season 2, many fans and gamers praised the team for offering parallels between the series and the games, showing that the adaptation remains faithful to its source.
According to HBO, the new season will premiere this Sunday, April 13 at 9 p.m. Eastern Time/Pacific Time, available on both HBO and Max.
