The Android 6.0 Marshmallow rollout is in full swing for many smartphones. The Verizon Galaxy Note 5 began receiving the new Google OS last Friday. Now, the several handsets in the Sony Xperia Z line are updating. The T-Mobile and Verizon HTC One M8 handsets are also expected to update, starting Monday.
The Xperia Z5, Xperia Z3 Plus and Z4 Tablet are now updating to Android 6.0 Marshmallow globally, according to Xperia Blog. Specific models updating include the SGP712 Wi-Fi and the GP771 LTE models of the Xperia Z4 Tablet and the E6553 single-SIM model of the Xperia Z3 Plus. The mobile blog said the Xperia Z3 Plus dual-SIM model will also soon update.
The firmware build 32.1.A.1.163 is hitting handsets wirelessly, taking them for Android 5.1 Lollipop to Android 6.0 Marshmallow. Sony noted the devices are not yet receiving Android 6.0.1; however, they will receive Google’s monthly security update for February.
However, users can expect, for the Xperia Z5 in particular that certain Sony and Google software features won’t be included in this update. Sony has decided to forgo adding its STAMINA mode, battery conservation feature to Android 6.0 Marshmallow. The Xperia Z5, Xperia Z4 Tablet and Xperia Z3 Plus also won’t receive Google’s Adaptive Storage feature, which reads microSD storage as if it were internal storage.
Several manufacturers, including Samsung and LG have opted to forgo including Adaptive Storage within its Android 6.0 updates to give users the ability to move applications and other files to their microSD cards to free up internal storage.
Meanwhile, HTC vice president of product management Mo Versi announced on Twitter Friday that the T-Mobile and Verizon HTC One M8 models would be updating to Android 6.0 starting Monday. So far neither carrier has announced an update, but users should remain on the lookout for the software to hit handsets wirelessly. Uses can check for the update manually by accessing Settings > About > Software Update.
