Get ready for tons of Spider-Man in the next two years. The rumors have been holding strong since 2015, but Sony has officially confirmed the new Spider-Man animated movie will feature Miles Morales, not Peter Parker. This Black and Puerto Rican Spider-Man from Brooklyn will get his chance on the big screen Dec. 21, 2018.
The film’s producer, Phil Lord, told press, "There are a ton of amazing surprises in this movie. The animated nature of it allows us to go places where we’ve never gone before. The thing that inspires us most about Spider-Man is that anyone can wear that mask. I think that’s why the character is so popular. That underneath there you can be any race, creed or color. You can be any gender. And everybody can kind of project themselves into that hero and that’s the kind of movie we’re trying to make.”
Sony Pictures Animation President Kristine Belson added, “Now for those of you who know who Miles is, you will understand why we are so excited to be telling his story. And for those of who don’t know Miles, look him up. He’s a pretty cool cat.”
Donald Glover voiced Morales for the ‘Web Warriors’ storyline in Ultimate Spider-Man. The series just ended this month, and will be replaced with another series from Disney XD called Marvel’s Spider-Man, set to release this summer. Check out the brief teaser below:
While the yet-untitled animated film will co-exist with its live-action counterparts, it is an independent project. Spider-Man: Homecoming starring Tom Holland arrives in theaters July 7, 2017.
