Taking inspiration from current Apple products, Motor Trend has tapped designers from The ArtCenter College of Design to envision what the Apple Car may look like if the electronics juggernaut decides to release a vehicle for the mass market.
Apple is rumored to have to an intensive research and development department dedicated toward creating an Apple Car, as Motor Trend pointed out. This division is called Project Titan and while Apple has never acknowledged it, Elon Musk has when commenting on the brain drain from Tesla in the Silicon Valley car industry.
The design of the Apple Car is supposedly headed by Apple Chief Design Officer Jony Ive, an established Apple tastemaker broadly credited for helping design the iconic shape of the iPhone series. According to Motor Trend, rumor has it that Project Titan came up with a finished conceptual design in September 2015, with a projected release date of 2019, but Ive shut the attempt down for not measuring up to his standards.
9to5Mac didn’t have the kindest words to say about the Motor Trend story, going as far as to say it was “bad sketches and renders,” and “the round-table discussion alone could have been interesting were it not seeking to pretend to be anything more than a bunch of guys chewing the breeze. As it is, though, it feels a long way short of what was teased.”
The concept designs that Motor Trend featured are interesting, but 9to5Mac does have a point. The designs are derivative of current Apple ideas at best, and may hold no relation to reality. But if you’re looking for an idea of what the Apple Car may look like, from a designer’s perspective, Motor Trend ’s fresh take is a good place to start.
