Ark: Survival Evolved has a new horse Dino coming, and it’s been revealed for a future update. The Equus Magnus sounds easy to tame but useless in combat, according to its official dossier.
From what the announcement tells us, the Equus appears to be similar to creatures that existed in North America during the Ice Age. It sustains itself via grazing, and it keeps itself safe from predators by traveling in herds. Speed and stamina are its greatest weapons for survival.
With regard to taming and domestication, it doesn’t sound like the Equus will be too difficult to add to your assortment of animal pals. After all, “horse and man have long been partners in survival.” Once, you’re able to nab one, however, it sounds like this beast can be pretty useful. While not especially helpful in combat, it’s specifically tuned for Island traversal. It could be a primary method of transportation in the updates to come.
Its description also makes reference to survivors that fashioned together bulky saddles with enough room to carry food, chemical supplies and other items to essentially design mobile crafting stations. Aside from that, the Equus’ herding talents might also be helpful in taming other Dinos.
From our perspective, the Equus seems to continue Studio Wildcard’s recent tradition of adding Dinos that bring new gameplay mechanics along with them. For many of the Dinos in the v253 update, it was all about atypical taming. This time, we’re looking at the possible emergence of Dino herding down the road. The whole mobile crafting station thing can already be accomplished by larger creatures like the Brontosaurus, but it’ll be nice to have those benefits in a smaller package.
Of course, as with most newly revealed Ark Dinos, it could be a few months before the Equus actually makes it into the game. The latest patch notes suggest that the v254 update is expected to arrive late next week, and this new creature isn’t featured on the changelog. When that goes live, however, survivors can look forward to seven other Dinos and the highly anticipated Tek Tier of items. It’s also worth noting that major console patches are anticipated for the coming days as well.
Ark: Survival Evolved is available now on PC, Xbox One, PS4, OS X and Linux. Be sure to check out our beginner’s guide if you’re just getting started.
