The CW just revealed Dinah Drake’s new Black Canary costume and there's only one word to describe it: amazing. We love you Laurel, but this suit is on another level. Juliana Harkavy is absolutely stunning in the new getup, and it’s only fair. Since Katie Cassidy’s Laurel is now evil, it’s only right the new Black Canary costume got a serious upgrade.
There are a few key differences. Firstly, Laurel’s costume is black leather from head to toe, covering her all the way down to her wrists. Dinah’s has short sleeves with patterns, paddings, and designs more similar to the Green Arrow. She wears long gloves that cover her arms up to the elbows. While Laurel’s has more of a utility belt with metal studs, Dinah’s has one strap around the waist and one on the upper thigh, military style. Her mask is also a little bit smaller.
The costume isn’t only a tease of Dinah’s new wardrobe, it also means she definitely survived the island. While Stephen Amell revealed Deathstroke will also be back for a couple episodes, his tease is quite suspicious. While it suggest Deathstroke lives, it’s possible Deathstroke dies while saving Team Arrow in the flashbacks to the moments right before the island explodes. Or, he gets everyone off the island then parts ways for good. This isn’t the case with Dinah, who we now know know will be a strong member of the team moving forward. Executive Producer Wendy Mericle confirmed this in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly.
“Last season, she wasn’t a full fledged superhero, you could say. She was, she had this power, she had this ability, she was part of the team, but really what this costume signifies more than anything is that she is now a full-fledged member of the team. She was before. But she’s now owning it in a different way. We had talked about having the costume at various points last season and it never felt right. It felt that we wanted to save it for a special occasion, and the premiere seemed like a really good place to do it. She needs something tactical. She has this meta power, but she also has the bo staff, so we just felt it was right for her to have something that was definitely more than a nod to the DCU character, but also something that was distinctive from what we’ve seen before. This really fits the bill. Maya Mani, as usual, did an amazing job with it. My favorite part is actually the subtle hint of the gold and yellow lines in it.”
While much of Dinah’s is backstory has been kept a secret (she even went by Tina Boland when she was first introduced, eventually revealing herself as Dinah Drake, who is the first Black Canary in the comics), Season 6 will delve into the character’s personal life much more deeply. This could be by way of flashbacks, which will no longer follow Oliver after his story came full circle in the Season 5 finale. But Entertainment Weekly ’s Spoiler Room with Natalie Abrams also revealed Dinah will develop a romantic relationship this season, which could provide some much needed depth to her character.
“I would say yes for that, but I’m not going to tell you with who, because that’s a fun story we’re very excited about. Not Diggle. That’s what’s so much fun.”
Will Dinah’s romance be with someone on Team Arrow, such as Wild Dog? Or, maybe Oliver and Dinah develop a special bond and we’ll see Black Canary and Green Arrow finally together again? That, however, would mean Felicity would need to stay out of the picture. The emotional bunker scene from last season sure doesn’t make it seem like Oliver and Felicity are done for good and a relationship with Dinah would probably not be a good idea whatsoever.
