John Diggle and the new Black Canary, Dinah Drake, have undeniable chemistry. But the two vigilantes will stay just friends, Juliana Harkavy clarified during an interview with ComicBook.
“Building that relationship has been one of my favorite things about this season,” Harkavy said. “I know there’s a lot of speculation as to what that relationship is. To me, I think it’s really a very deep friendship.”
Diggle is married, but he and Lyla have had problems in the past. Of course, they broke up for a period of time, then got back together and had Sara Diggle (now John Jr. because of Flashpoint.) However, since we don’t know the full story about what happened on Lian Yu and how it might have affected Diggle, it’s unclear if his marriage is still going strong.
“I think Dinah finds a kindred spirit in Diggle and cares for him a lot. Once she can open herself up to somebody, if you are in her heart, you’re in,” Harkavy said. "And I think seeing Diggle compromised, it’s really opened her up as a person and as a character and let her show some of her vulnerability. I really love what they’ve given to Dinah and Diggle.”
Ever since David Ramsey teased Diggle would “lose some things” this season, there’s also been speculation about the safety and well being of Lyla. She was not on Lian Yu during the explosions, but ARGUS may be the key to how everyone got off the island. If so, it’s possible Lyla was hurt in some way during the whole ordeal. Maybe it’s why Diggle has gotten closer to Team Arrow since defeating Prometheus.
"...I think specifically for Diggle; he's going to lose some things. This relationship [between Oliver and Diggle] is going to change, I think," Ramsey said. "I'm going to need him in a way I don't think I've needed him before. Some of the mentor/student aspect of our relationship."
Whether it’s friends or a romantic relationship, Diggle and Dinah have enormous respect for each other and it will be amazing to see how their stories continue to build in the wake of Lian Yu and Oliver’s journey. It’s supposed to be Black Canary and Green Arrow anyways...
