Retro gaming is all the rage thanks to Nintendo’s NES Classic and upcoming SNES Classic. This has sparked the development of more retro consoles, like Atari and the SEGA Genesis from AtGames. We’ve previously talked about the new Atari Flashback and SEGA Genesis Flashback consoles, and we now know when you can pre-order your own: July 28.
Pre-orders for the consoles will be available on the websites for major retailers such as Amazon, Best Buy and Target. Unfortunately, the price hasn’t been revealed for the consoles, but that information will be coming soon. We also don’t know for sure when the consoles will begin being delivered, but it will be some time during the fall.
However, that’s not the only retro console offering coming from Atari. Not to be confused with the AtGames consoles, Atari is also making a device called the “ Ataribox.” The first details of the console, shared in a recent email, mention there will be two versions of the device. One will be a more modern look and the other will be a throwback, with wood paneling and everything.
The Ataribox will have HDMI output, four USB ports to plug in controllers and an SD card slot. The email says that the console will not only feature retro Atari games, the Ataribox “will also be delivering current gaming content.”
As for when the Ataribox will be available, that remains a mystery. The email mentions details regarding the console’s specs, games, features and pricing will all be announced at a later date. “We want to get this right, so we’ve opted to share things step by step as we bring Ataribox to life, and to listen closely to Atari community feedback as we do so,” the email states. “We’ll be giving you lots more information and status updates as we progress, and we are thrilled to have you along for the ride.”
Based on the wording of the email, it sounds like the Ataribox is still a ways away from becoming a reality. That means if you want your retro Atari gaming as soon as possible, the AtGames Atari Flashback consoles are going to be for you. Hopefully the Ataribox can prove to be something interesting and worthwhile, because as of right now, it’s starting to sound a little like the Ouya.
So what do you think? Are you interested in either the AtGames consoles or the Ataribox? Would you be more interested in the Atari or SEGA Genesis Flashback? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
