Joss Whedon is leaving Disney for Warner Bros in an interesting turn of events. Looks like Whedon signed on to direct DC’s standalone Batgirl movie we didn’t even know was a thing.
Variety reports Whedon close to signing with Warner Bros to write, direct, and produce an untitled Batgirl movie as part of the DC Extended Universe. Whedon has yet to comment on the reports.
If Warner Bros manages to snag Whedon, it would be a huge win for the DC universe. Whedon was able to breath life into the Avengers movie and made the characters really stand out. The DC cinematic universe is struggling to keep up with the Marvel lineup. DC just released a new trailer for the Justice League movie, which looked incredible, but so did the Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice teasers.
Then there’s the Wonder Woman movie which hits theaters this summer, which also looks really great, but so did the Suicide Squad movie. Overall, the DC movies really need help developing their stories more than the visuals. If Whedon signs on for Batgirl, we’re sure he’ll bring his magical touch to the character.
Speaking of Batgirl, we’re curious who will play the character. There were rumbling of Hunger Games star Jena Malone taking on the role in Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, but her part was allegedly cut from the movie. Malone never confirmed she was Batgirl and neither did Warner Bros. Studio, but she would be an interesting choice for the role.
Who do you think should play Batgirl? Let us know in the comments below. Wonder Woman hits theaters June 2, and the Justice League movies will be released on Nov. 17.
