After much sturm und drang, a new director has been confirmed for the 2018 Batman movie: Matt Reeves, who directed Cloverfield and War for the Planet of the Apes.
According to Variety, Matt Reeves is in early talks to take over the role. A variety of directors were under consideration, ranging from Arrival ’s Denis Villeneuve to Captain Fantastic ’s Matt Ross. Reeves was also reported as part of the shortlist.
Ben Affleck gave up directing due to the stress and difficulty of wearing too many Batman hats (actor, producer, writer and director is a lot for anyone to do, even if they’ve done it before). In a statement, he said:
“There are certain characters who hold a special place in the hearts of millions. Performing this role demands focus, passion and the very best performance I can give. It has become clear that I cannot do both jobs to the level they require. Together with the studio, I have decided to find a partner in a director who will collaborate with me on this massive film. I am still in this, and we are making it, but we are currently looking for a director. I remain extremely committed to this project, and look forward to bringing this to life for fans around the world.”
Affleck’s role in the Batman is still considerable, since he co-wrote the script with Geoff Johns in addition to producing and playing the lead role. However, the selection of a new director enables him to focus on his chief role as actor, which may be for the best, as script troubles are rumored to beset the production.
Reeves is currently wrapping up War for the Planet of the Apes, due in theatres this July. The jury is still out on when Batman will begin production, which was initially supposed to start in May but was pushed back due to Affleck’s insane 2016 schedule. Fingers crossed for The Batman to start production by 2017, especially considering how fast they found their new director.
