Last week, Chadwick Boseman, who plays T’Challa, aka Black Panther, released the below Black Panther poster. And while the poster is getting criticized for the overuse of photoshop, it is certainly on point for the vibe of the character.
With the teaser now out, let’s take a look. The Black Panther trailer opens with two characters we’ve seen before in MCU films. Andy Serkis’ Ulysses Klaue (Aka Klaw) loses an arm dealing with Ultron in Avengers: Age of Ultron and Martin Freeman’s Everett Ross is a CIA operative who led the operation to control the Avengers in Captain America: Civil War.
The teaser then starts to move very fast — we get many glimpses of Wakanda, the hyper-advanced fictional African country that calls T’Challa their king. I was very glad to not see any of the core Avengers in the Teaser and I hope the film follows suit. The world of Wakanda and the new characters we see all look fresh and interesting and it would be a shame if the film became yet another team up movie. Hopefully the overlap with the rest of the MCU will be limited to minor characters, as seems to be the case.
I was thrilled when I heard Creed director Ryan Coogler would be helming the project, and so far everything looks great. Coogler is one of the best directors working on tentpole franchise films, so as long as Marvel gives him enough room to play, we may be in for one of the best MCU movies yet.
As Martin Scorsese said, “More than ninety percent of directing a picture is the right casting.” If that’s the case then damn, because look at the lineup in this film: Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong'o, Danai Gurira, Martin Freeman, Daniel Kaluuya, Angela Bassett, Forest Whitaker and Andy Serkis.
Black Panther releases Feb 16 of next year. What did you think of the teaser?
