Gearbox has just revealed the studio’s next game, but don’t get too excited if you’re a Borderlands fan. Called Project 1v1, the game is all about, well, one-on-one competition.
Little is known about the game except that it is a first-person shooter. The game’s website also mentions an added “metagame strategy of a collectible card game” on top of the shooter. While it’s not made clear, it sounds like players will unlock cards to earn in-game bonuses. These could range from different weapons to different ammo types or even new characters. Project 1v1 is still in development, but there will be a closed technical test soon. Interested gamers can sign up right now.
The technical test will include three different game modes. The first is basic ranked play. Players get paired up with someone of comparable skill. Winners walk away with added experience and crates, which grant an opportunity to unlock new cards. Because there are crates, this all but guarantees Project 1v1 will have microtransactions. So yay for that?
The second game mode is called “Challenge.” This is the most basic game mode for Project 1v1 as of right now. In Challenge, players simply invite friends to matches and fight. These matches are unranked, so you don’t have to worry if your friend is way better (or way worse) than you.
The last game mode sounds the most interesting. Called “Arena,” it seems like this is an interesting take on King of the Hill. Players line up to go head-to-head with the current champion until a challenger wins. This challenger becomes the new champion, and fights off his or her own wave of challengers. Arena mode reminds me of arcade culture, with challengers putting down quarters to try and oust the person on a win streak.
Based on background artwork, it looks like Project 1v1 will be set in a futuristic world, but there’s nothing to find about characters, a story or any other details. If you want any more information about Project 1v1, you’re out of luck. That’s all there is to find on the official website.
So what do you think? Are you interested in a one-on-one first-person shooter experience? Would you have rather seen Gearbox unveil Borderlands 3 instead? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
