In a hot new take on the dating sim genre, Boyfriend Dungeon is promising dungeon-crawler fans a romance with the very weapons critical to their chance of survival.
“Plunder the “dunj” and take your weapons on dates. Capture the hearts of cuties to level them up. Boyfriend Dungeon is the the playful shack-and-slash the world’s been waiting for!” says the game’s website , which currently features little more than a press kit, a trailer and a link to sign up for their mailing list.
Boyfriend Dungeon promises “procedurally generated dungeons and varied combat styles” as well as an “Inclusive, tasteful approach to gender and sexuality.” Between waves of dungeon-crawling, you’ll have to win the affection of your weapons in order to level them up by taking them out on dates. Then you can “equip your love” and plunge back into the depths
Only a handful of love interests have been introduced so far, such as Isaac (an épeé, a type of fencing sword I actually learned how to use in high school), Valeria (a dagger) and AJ (a talwar, a curved sword from Southeast Asia). The trailer spins a dizzying variety of promising silhouettes past you. I’m pretty sure I spotted a cat somewhere, but uh, dating a cat? Swords are one thing, but the furry line is not one I’m sure I’m willing to cross.
Boyfriend Dungeon is developed by Kitfox Games, a Montreal-based indie game company known for their RPG Moon Hunter. If you tire of Dream Daddy but Hatoful Boyfriend is a step too far, perhaps Boyfriend Dungeon will be the game for you. Christine Love (Ladykiller in a Bind, Digital: A Love Story, Analogue: A Hate Story) and Meg Jayanth (80 Days) will be contributing writing.
Perhaps the most novel thing about Boyfriend Dungeon is that it’s not a visual novel like Dream Daddy or Hatoful Boyfriend , incorporating procedural dungeons and actual combat with monsters into its romantic narrative. If you’d like to experience a little romance but aren’t a fan of the visual novel genre, Boyfriend Dungeon might be the game for you.
Boyfriend Dungeon is currently scheduled to arrive on PC in 2019, but we’ll keep you posted. Are you looking forward to dating a rapier? Are you hoping to romance a shotgun or woo a cleaver? Let us know your ideal weapon romance in the comments section below.
