Broad City will air its highly-anticipated Hillary Clinton episode Wednesday, March 16. The announcement came from series creators and stars Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer, who spoke at a South by Southwest panel Saturday morning in Austin, Texas.
The public has known about Clinton’s impending appearance on Broad City since December, when the presidential candidate tweeted a photo with herself, Jacobson, Glazer and series producer Amy Poehler on the show’s set. According to Jacobson, she and Glazer had wrote the episode with Clinton in mind, but never expected it to actually come to fruition.
“We were writing this very specific episode, and we actually wrote it where she didn’t even need to be in it,” Jacobson told Entertainment Weekly in January. “And then it was really crazy that she was into it, and so it became even more heightened when she was actually a part of it.”
The upcoming season three episode revolves around Ilana working for Clinton’s campaign, which is conveniently based out of Brooklyn (where much of Broad City takes place) in real life. Jacobson and Glazer also revealed that the episode will star former Sex and the City star Cynthia Nixon as well as Saturday Night Live alum Rachel Dratch and Emmy winner Alan Alda.
Despite the potential Democratic nominee’s cameo, Broad City won’t attempt to get too political, according to Jacobson and Glazer. This was actually brought to the spotlight when a young woman asked the Broad City stars about their decision to feature Clinton during the SXSW Q&A. She had assumed that Jacobson, Glazer and the show itself aligned more with Bernie Sanders’ beliefs.
“That's not our show, really, we're not making a political stance here,” answered Glazer following the noticeably uncomfortable question. “It was really more that this is something Ilana's character would do. And Hillary, regardless of where we stand — and we love Hillary — Hillary is such an iconic figure right now and she has been."
"We're trying to make really good TV,” she added. “I wonder how you'll feel after seeing it. I think you'll agree that it's a really good episode of TV because Hillary Clinton is in it."
Broad City airs at 10:00 p.m. ET every Wednesday on Comedy Central.
