Call Of Duty: WWII has been selected as the Game Informer cover story for September, and that means tons of exclusive reveals are on the way. Its coverage trailer even shows a few tiny things we’ve never seen before.
Most notable is the inclusion of multiplayer footage showing a previously unseen map. As seen in the image below, the arena has a large bridge and a balcony that can be used for shooting enemies from a distance. In the tradition of World War II games of the past, the overall aesthetic is pretty gray and grim. As an added bonus, the bottom left corner of the image confirms the return of Hardpoint mode too.
The footage also includes few minor weapons details too. For one, during a brief cut in the trailer, we see the player kill an opponent with the PPSh and then level up the gun. Sledgehammer Co-Studio Head Michael Condrey confirmed the gun for inclusion in this month’s Private Beta, but weapon levels are a new addition. Weapon XP has been featured in most recent Call Of Duty games, however, so its place in WWII isn’t exactly a massive surprise.
Beyond those two fairly minor teases, the trailer itself is fairly ordinary. There’s lots of praise about Sledgehammer’s commitment to the project and its three main pillars of the complete Call Of Duty experience: an epic campaign, competitive multiplayer and the “fear goulash” that is Nazi Zombies. Zombies in particular was described as the “darkest corner of Call Of Duty.” Again, these details aren’t necessarily new for anyone who’s followed our E3 or Comic-Con coverage, but everything seen here is a harbinger for the cooler stuff to come.
In particular, we’d love to learn more about both sides of multiplayer. When discussing co-op or competitive, Sledgehammer has been especially coy about naming maps or offering the kind of scope-focused details fans are looking for. With major fruit like that left intentionally ripe for the picking, we anticipate something along those lines as the month carries on.
For those who can’t wait for the Game Informer coverage to begin, it might be a good idea to follow the Twitter account of Michael Condrey. Over the past few weeks he’s teased the game’s menu screen, discussed multiplayer weapons and prematurely revealed the $160 Valor Collection bundle.
Call Of Duty: WWII comes to PS4, Xbox One and PC Nov. 3.
