Call Of Duty: WWII Nazi Zombies was unveiled during SDCC this week, and now you can watch the feature panel in addition to the new trailer. In a fairly lengthy discussion between cast and creators, Sledgehammer set the stage for what promises to be a spooky Zombies experience.

As far as the team leads are concerned, lots of emphasis was placed on Sledgehammer’s history with Dead Space and how those lessons will translate to Call Of Duty’s 2017 co-op mode. Just like in WWII’s single-player campaign, this story will have historical roots, but it will ultimately be held down by the “Sledgehammer stamp” that hardcore gamers may be familiar with.

For those not so versed in the studio's pedigree, that essentially means not just putting scares front and center but building tension in creative ways as well. Co-studio head Michael Condrey mentions that, while other horror creators have had luck dialing high-octane moments to 11 all the time, in Nazi Zombies, there will be moments where sensation is brought down to level two so player reaction can build toward something greater. It’s that strategy that allowed Dead Space to become so widely recognized and critically acclaimed.

Above all, Condrey described Nazi Zombies as a “dark, twisted [and] horrific” perspective on the Zombies construct fans know and love. That means four protagonists will be working together to solve a central narrative, but what players feel and find beneath that story will hopefully offer something remarkably different.

Speaking of four protagonists, the panel also featured physical and remote appearances from the mode’s key heroes and villains. The heroes are part of a group of Monument Men looking for stolen Nazi art, but they discover something far more sinister in the process. Here’s some brief character recaps.

  • Droston Hynd [David Tennant]: Droston is an antiques expert who was in prison but has been allowed to leave under the condition that he help the three heroes on their mission. He swears like a truck driver too.
  • Olivia Durant [Elodie Yung]: She’s a French resistance fighter and an art historian. Her father was captured by the Nazis. She takes on a guide-like role for the team.
  • Marie Fischer [Katheryn Winnick]: She was born in Germany but decided to leave behind the family weapon-making business and go to Cambridge. While there, she was recruited by the OSS. She embarks on this mission to reconnect with her misguided brother, Klaus. She’s a strong and brilliant engineer who kicks butt.
  • Doktor Peter Glucksbringer [Udo Kier]: If you couldn’t tell from the name, he seems to be the main villain our co-op quartet will confront. He’s the central voice featured in the reveal trailer.
  • Jefferson Potts [Ving Rhames]: He’s the skilled marksmen of the group.

For Creative Director Cameron Dayton, selecting a broader cast for Nazi Zombies meant opening players up to new perspectives and experiences they may not have had before. It was also very true to the real-world story of the diverse MFAA heroes that spent years of their lives tracking down Nazi treasures.

Call Of Duty: WWII Nazi Zombies chapter one releases with the full game Nov. 3. It’s available for pre-order on PS4, Xbox One and PC.
