Popular social networks may soon have competition from Peach, a free app from Vine’s founder Dom Hoffman. The iOS app is reportedly gaining popularity after its release on Friday for its unique features, which include sharing GIF messages, allowing for drawings, and letting users use “magic words” words to exchange interactive content.
“Peach is a refreshingly fun and simple way to keep up with friends and be yourself,” reads the app’s description in the Apple store. “Share tiny updates as you go through your day. Posting is as easy as texting "with a twist".”
The magic words essentially function like commands for the user. For instance, typing “draw” will let the user draw a picture, typing “shout” will produce words in large letters with a colored background, and typing “song” will let the user share whatever music they are playing at the time. Other magic words, reports TechCrunch, include: gif, here, goodmorning, goodnight, battery, weather, move, meetings, safari, dice, time, date, movie, tv, and game.
The app also revives a feature similar to the Facebook poke, where users can wave, blow a kiss, boop, put a ring on, or hiss at a friend. Text posts, which are being compared to Twitter, have no character limit and similar to Twitter, cannot be edited. Unlike other social networks, Peach lacks a continuous social feed.
Peach made its way to the top 10 spot for social networking apps on Apple’s app store in the U.S., suggesting that the app has tremendous potential in the market. The trajectory and overall success of the app is yet to be determined. The app could potentially take the course of Periscope and garner a large number of users or it could phase out similar to apps like Ello and Yo.
