Clash Of Clans’ fifth anniversary celebration continues, and the latest limited-time gift is the six-day addition of a brand new spell called Birthday Boom. It functions pretty similarly to the Lightning Spell, but we’ve got some additional stats and strategies for those who want to make the most of it.
Birthday Boom arrives in the Builder’s fourth week of absence from the game. For the next handful of days the Wizard will be taking over the Builder’s duties, and Birthday Boom is the unique gift he’s created to help his friends. In the meantime the Builder has been visiting key cities around the world and littering them with P.E.K.K.A. statues and Tesla Towers. We expect he’ll return from his global journey with a new surprise, but there’s no telling what that surprise might be.
Here’s the official description of Birthday Boom and some notes on the kind of damage it does:
Summon an explosive surprise to celebrate the anniversary! This classy gift damages and stuns nearby buildings and troops.
- Damage: Deals 30 percent damage to Town Halls
- Cost: 19,000 Elixir
- Damage Type: Area Splash
- Freeze Duration: 2 seconds
- Area Of Effect: Five tiles
- Housing Space: Two
- Targets: Ground and Air troops
- Bonus: Leaves behind presents with 5,000 Elixir when used
As far as strategy is concerned, Birthday Boom’s use is actually fairly specific. While 30 percent damage is an OK stat, it’s certainly not the most powerful option on the table. Players should be looking at the spell’s additional effects, like the stun and AoE, to determine the optimal timing. Birthday Boom is best used when there’s a huge group of troops to stun. It’s designed for effectiveness against massive armies, not small clusters. When raw power is needed, Lightning is still a better substitute.
Beyond Birthday Boom, this latest maintenance break also introduces the previously announced matchmaking changes to Clan Wars. In short, the existing system has been tweaked to work via a new “battle weight” attribute to curb the impact of engineered bases. Under the new provisions, those min-maxing to gain the upper hand will be matched against others with similar setups. The goal is to make the playing field more level across the board. Should the new rules cause more harm than good, Supercell is committed to making further adjustments as necessary.
Clash Of Clans is available now on Android and iOS. The Birthday Boom event only lasts six days, so it’s expected to conclude Aug. 31.
