This year’s League of Legends Mid Season Invitational in Shanghai, has been full of upsets and insanity. SK Telecom, the team that has been dominating so much that ESPN wrote an op-ed on how godlike Faker is, has not been dominating as most expected. Royal Never Give Up is now the first place team after the group stages, losing only to Counter Logic Gaming, the North American team everyone assumed would be last.
G2, the European team that crushed the EU LCS Spring Split, has been having a terrible time. At the end of group stages they only won two games, having a worse record than the International Wild Card team, Supermassive. G2 released a statement saying that they went on “vacation” instead of bootcamping in Korea like CLG. Their terrible showing has affected EU’s seeding for the World Championship, so some players like Edward , are quite upset.
Here are just a few of the highlights from the five days of MSI’s pulse-pounding games.
This is the day four game that made everyone realize “oh wait, CLG is really good.” The casters are basically screeching from the excitement, CLG and RNG put up quite the show. After losing all their base towers, CLG looks like they are poised to just be RNG’s next victim. In a team fight at Dragon pit, CLG manages to stop RNG from getting their fifth dragon. Lucian just runs in and dies, MonteCristo thought it was pretty funny. CLG then manage to win another epic team fight and then the game.
Faker channeled his inner jungle camp and became a wolf. On day five, his team has just been wiped and he knows that if he dies, the game is essentially over. On Lulu with zero mana, he manages to hide out of vision of the enemy and recall, saving his base. Faker may not have had the best performance this tournament, but little tricks like this show us how amazing he still is.
I just find this one to funny to pass up. On day five, G2 went up against SKT and had themselves a good old fashioned clown fiesta. Kikis on Poppy throws down the hammer and knocks Faker onto G2’s mid laner, Perkz. It is a serious series of unfortunate events, but at that point you just can’t help but laugh.
CLG is so much fun to watch when they are ahead. They take crazy risks and make super flashy plays. On day two they played G2 and they spanked them hard. Try not to watch these highlights without giggling, it’s impossible.
