At a Monday Netflix press event in Paris, Daredevil actor Charlie Cox couldn’t give any details on Daredevil Season 3’s release date.
“We don’t know if there’s going to be a season three,” Cox announced. “I certainly don’t know.”
Cox told press the same thing before Daredevil Season 2 even premiered, but it turns out he knows at least a little bit because at the Netflix event he also revealed The Defenders mini-series will begin filming late 2016. This leads us to believe the first Defenders season will come before Daredevil Season 3. In January, Netflix’s chief content officer Ted Sarandos said the schedule of ‘third seasons’ depends on the production of The Defenders . At this stage, Daredevil is the only third season Serandos could be speaking about.
“The complex one is really running into The Defenders , Sarandos said during a Television Critics Association presentation. “ The Defenders production schedule will determine the production schedule of second and third seasons. It’s a work in progress.”
After Daredevil Season 2 premiered, Hollywood Reporter caught up with showrunners Marco Ramirez and Doug Petrie. The two producers were asked specifically if the ending of Season 2 was crafted so that Daredevil Season 3 would release before The Defenders.
“ Marvel TV and Jeph Loeb have a solid plan for how everything will weave into everything. We definitely crafted it with the goal of feeding into the larger Marvel TV Universe because they have such a specific plan of action for Marvel and Netflix. That was just our hope, to make sure that it worked as its own season of TV and also as fitting into the larger world of all the other shows,” Ramirez said.
The first season of Luke Cage and Iron Fist have yet to release, and Jessica Jones Season 2 isn't expected until 2017. It’s highly unlikely Netflix and Marvel will forgo Daredevil Season 3 considering its success, but many fans are wondering how a season could have that many cliffhangers and be pushed back behind The Defenders in the production schedule. This begs the question, will The Defenders focus on a specific character’s storyline? Not surprisingly, Cox has no idea what Marvel and Netflix have planned for The Defenders plot. However, he does have a few predictions for Daredevil Season 3 (if it happens, he adds) that include Bullseye and more of Kingpin.
“I can’t imagine doing a run of Daredevil where Bullseye doesn’t show up at some point. It would be great to have him around at some point... I just think there’s such an interesting, rich character there, and also of course, the history that Bullseye has with Karen Page is an interesting dynamic,” Cox told CinemaBlend .
Bullseye was fans’ top pick for Daredevil Season 2’s main baddie. Rumors that Jason Statham would play Bullseye went wild until Netflix finally shot them down. Cox also said the Wilson Fisk / Kingpin storyline has to continue into Season 3 or 4.
“Rather than have a new character every season I’d love us to explore more of the Wilson Fisk stuff. It’d be great if at some point Vincent D’Onofrio would come back for a season. There’s so much Daredevil-Wilson Fisk left untold. As he really came into his own, as Wilson Fisk turned into the Kingpin at the end of season one, I’d love to see what that now does to the Daredevil-Fisk dynamic going forward if we were to do a season 3 or 4 or whatever.”
Sounds like we may not see Daredevil Season 3, and Season 2 of Luke Cage and Iron Fist, before The Defenders . Netflix has only confirmed the release date for Luke Cage’s solo debut on September 30th. How do you think this release schedule will play out? Let us know in the comments below!
