Demon’s Souls, the popular first entry in the “SoulsBorne” franchise, is shutting down its servers in early 2018. This information comes from the official Atlus website, the publisher for Demon’s Souls.
According to Atlus, Demon’s Souls will still remain completely playable as a single-player game once servers go offline Feb. 28. The shuttering of the game’s servers will only end the multiplayer features, such as in-game messaging, player death locations and World Tendency features.
“It’s with mixed emotions we say goodbye to the service. Countless players have enjoyed Demon’s Souls and the functionality it introduced to players when such things were rarer,” Atlus wrote in the announcement post. “If you’ve played the game then you understand the feeling of dying multiple times in the span of 10 minutes or dealing with a boss fight so difficult that it took you a week just to figure out the best way to attack. The unforgiving nature of the game has provided countless enjoyable moments of frustration and anger, but also the elation felt from beating something so challenging. This difficulty and grit helped pave the way for even more punishing games such as its spiritual successor Dark Souls, the 2017 hit Nioh, and the landmark PS4 title, Bloodborne.”
While it is sad to see, this move does make some sense. Demon’s Souls is only playable on PS3, meaning the number of gamers still logging onto the Demon’s Souls servers has to be very small. While there probably is a community of dedicated Demon’s Souls players, gamers as a whole have moved on to the Dark Souls and Bloodborne games. There hasn’t been any mention of these servers getting shut down, however.
Atlus also shared some fond memories of Demon’s Souls from their staff, including those who weren’t working at the company when the game was released. To celebrate the final days of Demon’s Souls multiplayer, Atlus will stream the game on the company’s Twitch channel in December.
