Destiny 2 Open Beta Trailer Is Light On Gameplay, Heavy On Information

Destiny 2
Destiny 2 Bungie

We finally have a better idea of what to expect from the Destiny 2 open beta when it begins later this month, courtesy of a new trailer from Activision and Bungie. Some may be disappointed by the content on offer, particularly if they were one of the 15,000 consumers at E3 this year, but it’s nice to see Bungie managing expectations on the road to Destiny 2.

The Destiny 2 beta will give fans access to the same smattering of content shown to E3 2017 attendees. We’ll get to play through the opening mission, just like the first Destiny beta in July 2014, and one of the strikes from the Destiny 2 campaign. The community will also be allowed to squeeze in however many Crucible matches they can stomach (and complete) before the beta ends in late July. The trailer didn’t mention anything about patrol zones, but it’s possible we’ll get to explore a small section of the new Eastern European patrol zone too.

Time will be at a premium during the Destiny 2 beta. Technically, the fun begins on July 18. But that’s only for PS4 owners who pre-ordered Destiny 2. Xbox One owners with a pre-order have to wait another 24 hours. And the door won’t open to the rest of us until July 21.

Here are all the dates you need to know:

  • July 18 - PS4 Pre-Order Beta begins

  • July 19 - Xbox One Pre-Order Beta begins

  • July 21 - Open Beta on PS4 and Xbox One

  • July 23 - Console Betas End

  • Late August - PC Beta

For an early look at the content we’ll get to explore in the Destiny 2 open beta, take a minute to watch the new trailer from Bungie and Activision. Then head down to the comments section and let us know if you’re planning to participate in the Destiny 2 open beta when it begins July 18.

Destiny 2 is in development for PS4, Xbox One and PC. The game hits consoles on Sept. 6 before making the jump to PC in late October.
