Bad news for Star Wars fans looking to journey into a new video game. EA released its latest estimated release date for the EA Motive unnamed Star Wars game. Along with this information, EA also revealed how much money it spends developing new intellectual properties. This information comes from EA CFO Blake Jorgensen, speaking at a panel for the 37th Nasdaq Investor Conference, by way of DualShockers.
During the conference, Jorgensen said the new Star Wars game from EA Motive will likely release in fiscal year 2021 or 2022, or somewhere between April 2020 and March 2022 for those of us using a real calendar. Unfortunately, it will probably be a few more years until EA can offer a more specific release date.
We don’t yet know what this new Star Wars game will be like, but we do know what it won’t be. According to EA’s most recent statement about the untitled game, Visceral’s original plans were for a linear action-adventure game. EA has scrapped these plans, shifting focus toward a “broader experience” that gives players a “greater depth and breadth to explore.” I’m not sure what this means, and I’m not sure if EA knows either.
Additionally, Jorgensen EA spends around 25 percent of its development money working on new intellectual property. This figure includes the Star Wars game at Motive, BioWare’s ambitious Anthem and projects that haven’t yet been revealed.
Adding to this, Jorgensen said EA is also looking to shift to a more open development environment. This means encouraging different studios to help each other make better games. Additionally, EA has encouraged developers to share game concepts while still in their infancy. Throwing some shade at the former Visceral Games, Jorgensen said some studios waited “until it was too late to make tough decisions” when showing off game concepts. Showing off ideas early will allow EA to change a game’s direction faster if it is needed.
So what do you think? Are you upset to hear the new Star Wars game from Motive isn’t coming out for a number of years? What do you think the new projects in development at EA are like? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
