It’s common to leave an emoji or meme in reply to a comment on Facebook but, every now and then, the most fitting reply is a video response. Thus far, Facebook did not support sharing videos in response to a comment but the social media giant announced on Thursday that they have rolled out video comments worldwide.
“At Facebook’s 50th Hackathon early this year, we prototyped the ability to upload a video into comments and replies on posts, because we wanted enable more engaging and immersive conversations,” wrote Facebook engineer Bob Baldwin in a post. “This adds to the suite of multimedia features within comments including: links, photos, stickers, emoji, and starting today video.”
The video comment feature — which is available on iOS, Android and on desktop web — can be used in replies to specific posts by users and pages, and also in replies within groups and events. Using the new feature is intuitive: simply click on the camera icon next to the comment field and record a video response. Then upload the video to send your reply.
Adding videos to comments is just one of many steps Facebook has taken to promote video content and introduce multimedia features. Earlier this year, Facebook globally debuted the Facebook Live video streaming feature and announced shortly thereafter that it would be tweaking its News Feed algorithm to make live videos pop up higher in the feed.
