Overwatch is always entertaining, but sometimes it gets a little old seeing the same maps over and over. And while the game doesn’t necessarily have a shortage of maps, players may find the rotation predictable if they end up playing a lot. For instance, you might be protecting the payload in Hanamura one game, then head right back to Hanamura to contest over an objective the next game. This is annoying, but it could easily be solved with the addition of a few new maps into the mix. As it stands, new maps are added at such a slow pace that it can be frustrating.
Overwatch fan Joshua Llorente wanted a new map so bad, he visualized a brand-new map and created what we see here. Titled "Cairo," this map was shared in a video that features a detailed walkthrough and fly-through. Llorente’s custom work is impressive and can pass off for an official map, torn straight out of an Overwatch DLC. If you didn’t already know it wasn’t official, you’d probably be none the wiser about its real origin.
The map looks like a faithful recreation of an area the artist views as simultaneously futuristic and inclusive of the exotic sights and sounds of the actual Cairo city in Egypt. It’s been given such a lavish set of textures and architecture that it looks just like something Blizzard could have released as part of a new developer update video. Jeff Kaplan himself even took to Reddit to communicate with Joshua, promising that he’ll be in touch. Perhaps Llorente has a future with the company, as it certainly seems that his talent would be put to good use there.
Llorente has created several other maps for Overwatch before as well, which you can check out here. If Llorente is not already working with some sort of video game studio or something similar, he should certainly be considered, as this is some gorgeous work that would actually be cool to see come to the actual game.
