Fox has renewed The Gifted , its series about mutants and the X-Men, for a second season to air in 2018-19, despite complications from the record-breaking Disney merger.
Fox’s budding new series will wrap up its first season with a two-hour finale on Jan. 15. The 13-episode arc focused on new mutants who briefly appear (or not at all) in the X-Men films at war with the U.S. government.
It was expected The Gifted would get an early renewal for a second season, but the recent Disney buyout of 20th Century Fox properties put the move on hold. The split between the Fox Network (which is not being sold to Disney) and 20th Century Fox put the show’s future in jeopardy. The network’s renewal of The Gifted shows its confidence in the show.
The Gifted ranks as Fox’s No. 3 new drama of the 2017-18 broadcast season, averaging 8.3 million total viewers (with seven days of DVR), according to The Hollywood Reporter.
After Disney’s massive purchase of 20th Century Fox properties, it will likely take at least a year to to see the impact on movies and television series like The Gifted . As Collider points out, 20th Century Fox—the movie studio—as well as cable TV channels like FX will come under the ownership of Disney, but FOX broadcast network will remain a separate entity, so the Disney deal may not affect The Gifted at all.
The Gifted focuses on the Strucker family, who finds itself in the middle of the war between the mutants and the government. Reed Strucker prosecutes mutants who have broken the law, but his life and that of of his family changes when the world finds out his two children are mutants. The first season of The Gifted highlights a back-and-forth of ideologies and allegiances as the Struckers look for their place in the grand scheme of this world.
