Google I/O is right around the corner, and while tech fans everywhere are especially excited to see Google showcase developments of Android N, a new operating system likely isn’t the only thing Google will unveil at the conference.
According to Recode , Google plans to launch a voice-operated personal assistant device, similar to Amazon Echo. An informant told the publication that the device is codenamed "Chirp" and should launch some time this year. However, it is not clear whether the device will be announced or previewed at Google I/O.
At its core, Amazon Echo is a high-tech speaker stem. The device works with music apps including Prime Music, Spotify, Pandora, iHeartRadio and TuneIn, which users can control with their voice. Amazon Echo also responds to voice controls to read audio books and provide users with news, reports traffic, weather and other important information. Within the home, Amazon Echo can control lights, thermostats and other smart devices for a household.
