Guacamelee, the hit Metroidvania platformer dripping with Lucha Libre spirit, is back! This news comes from an announcement trailer just released at Paris Games Week, which can be viewed above.
Guacamelee 2 will have players once again taking on the role of Juan Aguacate to face off against time and space itself. Based on the gameplay trailer, the concept of two parallel worlds from the original Guacamelee is back, but it looks like interactions with the worlds have been turned up even more. Waves of dimensions course over each level, forcing players to constantly jump around each room to time attacks and solve puzzles properly.
Developer DrinkBox Studios has increased the number of players this time around. Instead of playing through the game with a buddy by your side, you’ll be able to have three other friends join you for a four-player co-op session.
There are also a number of new mechanics, with the most prominent being the Eagle Boost. This move allows players to grapple onto different points in levels and boost to reach higher platforms. There will also be greatly expanded Chicken Form moves if you like playing in feathered form.
“In addition to the new levels, enemies, bosses, characters, improved visuals and player mechanics we’re introducing in Guacamelee 2, we’re also excited to have much more emphasis on the chicken form in this game,” said Graham Smith, co-founder of DrinkBox Studios, in a press statement. “Everyone on the team really wanted the sequel to have more FOWL PLAY. Hahaha, do you get it? It’s funny because it sounds the same as ‘foul play’. I’m not sure you get it.”
Unfortunately, DrinkBox would only reveal the release date for Guacamelee 2 is “soon-ish.” Seeing as how the phrase “soon” often means a number of months, adding the “ish” seems like it will be even longer of a wait. A good guess for a release window is probably around this time next year.
For those without a PS4, the wait will be even longer. Guacamelee 2 is only confirmed for PS4 as of right now, and if there’s a similar deal in place as there was for the first Guacamelee, it will be exclusive to Sony’s console (or consoles if there’s a PS Vita version) for six months to a year. While a Switch, PC and Xbox One port will very likely come at some point, it’ll likely be more than a year until it’s here.
So what do you think? Are you excited to see Guacamelee 2 confirmed? Will you play co-op with three other friends? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
