'Half-Life' and 'Portal' Movies Are 'Still In Development' Says J.J. Abrams

The cake may be a lie, but the movie isn't Valve

Half Life 3 might never come, but it’s looking good for the Half Life movie. In an interview about his newest movie he produced, 10 Clovefield Lane , J.J. Abrams talked about the future of the Half-Life and Portal movies.

When asked about what has happened to the movie about Valve’s beloved franchises, Abrams said : “they're in development and we've got writers, and we're working on both those stories. But nothing that would be an exciting update." These movies were first hinted at DICE 2013 , when Gabe Newell, Valve’s CEO, and J.J. Abrams sat on stage and discussed future movie prospects for the beloved franchises.

Movies can be stuck in development hell for years; many beloved franchises never make it to the movie screen. Most recently, Guillermo Del Toro was slated to work on a Silent Hill movie with Hideo Kojima. Konami had a bit of a falling out with the Metal Gear creator, and the movie was cancelled. Del Toro is still willing to work on the movie, but knows it’s probably never going to happen.

Portal is one of my favorite games and its story and imagery would make for a great movie. We don’t really know much about Chell, Portal’s silent antagonist, other than that she looks great in an orange jump suit. Glados will forever be the best robot in a video game, followed closely by her successor Wheatley.

As Glados sings in “Still Alive,” it’s hard to overstate my satisfaction.
