In a new post on the official Overwatch blog, Blizzard shares the “harrowing tale” of mad Dr. Jamison Junkenstein and his sinister master, the beautiful Witch of the Wilds. In what Blizzard is calling a “comic tapestry,” illustrator Gary Shuko brings The Return of Junkenstein to life.
The narrative follows the tale of four “Wanderers” and the peace they brought to the bucolic, suspiciously Eichenwalde-looking town of Adlersbrunn, a peace that was doomed to falter once the Witch of the Wilds (Mercy) breathed life back into her fallen servant (Junkrat). Not even the Lord of Adlersbrunn (a very sad yet noble Reinhardt) could stop Dr. Junkenstein’s renewed rampage with his infernal army (feautring Roadhog), so he sent out some carrier pigeons…
The pigeons returned with a “legendary Viking craftsman” (the Torb himself, pictured about to land a hammer blow between a dragon’s eyes like he’s stunning some cattle for homemade burgers), “the Countess” (Widowmaker and her “unending hunger”), and #GenyattaConfirmed, uh, I mean “the Monk and his apprentice, the Swordsman.”
Like “the Wanderers of old,” the four heroes must face off against Junkenstein, the Witch and their infernal legions, which feature “a faithful servant” (Reaper) and “a monstrous new ally: the Summoner” (Symmetra), who are “bound by the Witch’s will by pacts forged in blood.”
It’s a damned cool bit of alternate universe fanfiction made canon, but this might just be the coolest thing about it: three of the Wanderers are pictured wearing Halloween skins that are available in game… except for Genji’s extremely cool wandering swordsman outfit, complete with a simple robe and what seems to be a mask under a wide-brimmed conical hat.
It’s the perfect outfit for a ronin looking to hide his identity, especially one traveling with a mysterious monk powered by some sinister forces… but no Wandering Swordsman skin is available for Genji. Yet. Might we be seeing one soon, or will we have to wait until next Halloween, if ever?
If you need some more hot Genji content, a new Genji statue is available for pre-order here in the Blizzard store. It costs a pretty penny at $150, but the 11.75” figure features tons of authentic, beautiful details, like the sheen to Genji’s face mask, the patterning on the long bit of cloth attached to the back of his skull and the individual detailing on each of his cyborg fingers as they grip his blade. If I had $150 to spare for some Genji booty in my living room, you bet I’d lay down that pre-order too.
You can get more details about Overwatch ’s Halloween Terror 2017 event, including a detailed look at all the new legendary skins, here. The event runs from Oct. 10 to Nov. 1 and also brings back skins from last year, along with the new Junkenstein Endless brawl, haunted versions of the Eichenwalde and Hollywood maps, the return of PvE mode Junkenstein’s Revenge and a load of cosmetic items as well.
Do you think we’ll see a Wandering Swordsman skin for Genji, or is it all just wishful thinking? How is your legendary skin acquisition progress in Halloween Terror 2017 going? Feel free to let us know in the comments section below.
