Remember when Halo was going to have its own TV series? That’s still going to happen, according to an interview Showtime executives had with TV Guide. Unfortunately, that’s pretty much all we know at this point.
Showtime President and CEO David Nevins confirmed the show is still in the works while at the Television Critics Association winter press tour. "[It's] still in very active development," he told TV Guide. Nevins also revealed he has seen scripts for the show, but didn’t provide any other details.
Gary Levine, president of programming at Showtime, added that the Halo series "is absolutely still in development, still moving forward and I'm encouraged by what we've seen so far." Levine provided additional information on the series, adding that "It's [the Halo show] still live action, and it will definitely satisfy the fans of Halo and I think also satisfy the drama audiences of Showtime."
Originally announced way back in 2013 and scheduled for a Fall 2015 release, the Halo series has been delayed several times. Acclaimed director Steven Spielberg is still attached as an executive producer, and District 9 director Neill Blomkamp was rumored to be a director for the show. No other names have been attached to the project since it was announced, however.
We don’t know where in the Halo universe this show will be set. It seems doubtful the series would revolve around the adventures of Master Chief, since those stories are usually reserved for the games themselves. The only other live-action Halo -related show that has been made was Halo: Nightfall, a short series used to bridge the gap in story between Halo 4 and Halo 5, as well as provide a background story for new character Agent Locke. It’s possible the show picks up where Nightfall left off, or has been reworked to act as a bridge from Halo 5 to whatever is next for the Halo franchise.
